Cannabis concentrates are a product extracted from cannabis. Our bodies produce a substance called resin that plays a role in our immune system and protects us from infections. It also has the ability to bond to other substances, especially when exposed to heat. Resin is used in the process of creating cannabis concentrates. Resin can be found in most parts of the cannabis plant, but has been found to be in highest concentration in the trichomes of the plant.

What are cannabis concentrates?

When you heat up cannabis resin, you get what is commonly referred to as hashish, honey oil, BHO, rosin, shatter, wax and crumble. The term 'cannabis concentrates' refers to the extracts which are created using various methods and consist of high amounts of cannabinoids and terpenes.

The main types of cannabis concentrates are hash, shatter, wax, oil, tinctures, dry ice or live resin and rosin. Each of these types is extracted using different methods and have their own characteristics and effects.

Hash or hashish is one of the oldest types of cannabis concentrates. It is extracted by pressing and sifting the whole cannabis plant material through a mesh screen, and then pressing it to collect the resin that is suspended in the trichome heads. After the pressing, more sifting and pressing is usually applied to make sure the trichomes are removed entirely. Depending on how much heat was used during the pressing, you get different types of hash: ice hash is the driest form while pipe hash is more oily.

Shatter is a type of hydrocarbon-based cannabis concentrate that is created through extraction using a pressure cold environment. This type of concentrate has clear or translucent appearance and becomes solid after being exposed to heat for a brief period of time.

Wax is another type of cannabis concentrate that resembles honey or a sticky paste. It is extracted using low heat yet high pressure so that it becomes malleable just like putty or soft wax. This form also tends to become hard after being exposed to higher temperatures for a short while.

Tinctures are created through an alcohol extraction method. The cannabinoids are suspended in either ethanol or glycerin liquid and placed in dark bottles which prevent the evaporation of cannabinoids. Tinctures are usually used as oral sprays or drops and tend to be very strong because they only use an alcohol base instead of hydrocarbons like most other types of concentrates do.

Dry ice or live resin is a concentrated form of resin that contains terpenes as well as cannabinoids within its structure. It generally looks like solid crystals and takes up less space than other types of extracts; this is what makes it unique from other forms of concentrates. Since terpenes are contained within this type of concentrate, it can be rather pungent when inhaled or consumed orally.

Rosin is extracted using heat and pressure from an organic source such as grapes to create a solid layer that adheres to a surface like parchment paper or parchment paper made from silicone. Cannabis rosin can also be produced via solventless extraction using heat on an extraction surface that has been prepared beforehand with a solvent base such as wax or grease. The rosin differs from shatter in that it uses organic material instead of hydrocarbons as a base for its creation.
